10 of our favorite Ford V-8s
2. GAA V-8 Tank Engine (1940–1960)

You read that right—this 1,000-cubic-inch monster wasn’t built for cars, but tanks.
Ford took inspiration from the mighty Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12 used in WWII fighter planes and built a V-8 version for armored vehicles. At 500 hp, it powered Sherman tanks and more, running with the same setup as some twin-diesel GM tanks.
Fun fact: It had flat-plane cranks and DOHC design—way ahead of its time.
Why it matters: It proved Ford could make V-8s for more than just the track.
