10 of our favorite Ford V-8s
4. FE Series (1958–1976)

If you’re a Ford fan, you’ve definitely heard of the FE. It was the workhorse that turned into a legend.
The 427 FE powered Ford’s Le Mans–winning GT40s in 1966. The 390 powered Bullitt’s Mustang. The 427 SOHC “Cammer,” built to fight Chrysler’s Hemi, was banned from NASCAR—but dominated in drag racing.
Still popular today, the FE is a go-to for vintage street and race builds.
Why it matters: It powered icons—from Bullitt to Le Mans.
