Mercedes-Benz 230SL Pagoda

Choosing the most beautiful Mercedes-Benz model ever made is no easy task, but the 230SL from 1963-1971 would certainly be a strong contender. Following the 300SL coupe and 190SL roadster, the 230SL toned down some of the more dramatic curves of the '50s, opting for a more refined and striking design. Though not officially named, the "Pagoda" moniker is widely used, inspired by the car's removable hardtop that resembles the rooflines of a Japanese pagoda.

The specifications of the 230SL are impressive. It upgraded to a 6-cylinder engine with a displacement of 2.3 liters, compared to the previous model's 1.9-liter engine. The car also featured the same mechanical fuel injection system as the 300SL, delivering a healthy 150 horsepower---plenty for a car of its size. To boost rigidity, the body panels were spot-welded to the frame rather than bolted, which helped reduce flex on corners. However, as Driving points out, this could make repairs costly.

The understated elegance of the 230SL is undoubtedly its greatest strength. Priced at around $7,000 in 1963, it attracted a select group of buyers. While well-maintained examples may not fetch record-breaking prices at major auctions, MotorAuthority notes that they can still exceed $50,000 at auction today.
