How to Fix Common Air Conditioner Problems

Now that we've covered what could go wrong, let's walk through easy, at-home fixes you can try yourself---no expert required.
1. Cooling or Heating Isn't Strong Enough?
Here's what you can do:
Clean or Replace Air Filters: Dirty filters are one of the most common causes of weak airflow. Remove the filters, give them a good vacuum or rinse (check your manual), and dry them thoroughly before reinstalling. Do this at least every 1--2 months during peak use.
Check for Blocked Vents and Fans: Dust and debris can build up fast. Open the front panel and carefully clean the fan blades and vents with a dry cloth or soft brush. Make sure there's no furniture blocking the airflow, too.
Reset the System: Some AC units have a reset button. Unplug the unit, wait a few minutes, and then plug it back in. This can clear up minor glitches and restore cooling.
