THE 10 BEST AND WORST ENGINES MADE BY MAJOR AUTOMAKERS
Worst Toyota Engine: 3VZ-E 3.0L V6

Now, not every Toyota engine has been a home run. The 3VZ-E V6 from the late '80s and early '90s definitely missed the mark.
This engine was supposed to power trucks and SUVs like the 4Runner, but with just 150 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque, it just didn’t have the muscle. You don’t want your off-roader to feel like it’s struggling to pull out of your driveway, let alone handle trails.
And the problems didn’t stop there. The engine had some serious overheating issues, thanks to a weak cooling system. Certain areas would get way hotter than others, which wore out parts like the head gasket faster than normal. The timing belt also had to be swapped out every 60,000 miles—or risk it snapping. Basically, it was one of those engines that made you dread going to the mechanic. Not Toyota’s finest moment.
