Why does Ford no longer make their own engines?
It’s Cheaper to Source Engines Than Build Them

Let’s be real—developing an engine from scratch isn’t just about passion. It’s expensive, time-consuming, and full of regulatory headaches. Emissions rules? Efficiency benchmarks? Safety standards? All of that has to be engineered in.
For Ford, it’s now more cost-effective to partner with suppliers or use engines that are already in mass production. Why sink millions into R&D when you can get a perfectly good turbo-four from a partner—and most customers won’t even notice the difference?
This isn’t just a Ford thing either. The whole industry is streamlining powertrain development. Ford’s just being blunt about it.
