Why does Ford no longer make their own engines?

The Age of Shared Platforms Has Arrived

Once upon a time, every vehicle had its own platform and powertrain. Now? Not so much.
Ford—like most automakers—is embracing modular architectures that support multiple body styles, from SUVs to trucks, with one shared powertrain setup. That means fewer unique engines, and more off-the-shelf solutions.
In fact, many of Ford’s newer models are built on shared platforms with global partners, like VW for the European market. When you share the platform, you often share the engine too. It’s efficient, scalable, and yes, kind of boring—but it works.
